This article is part of: Torres del Paine W Trek — Chile in TRAILS THAT TRANSFORM YOU
Torres del Paine's W Trek is a five-day, four-night route through some of the most dramatic scenery in Patagonia — granite towers, glaciers calving into turquoise lakes, and windswept valleys that make you feel like you're walking through a screensaver that's somehow real.
It's also one of the most logistically demanding treks to book in South America. Miss your booking window and you'll spend your trip staring at someone else's Instagram from the exact spot you wanted to stand.
Here's how to make sure that doesn't happen.
Bookings open mid-October; popular dates sell out in hours
Free campsites require reservation; paid ones book fast
LATAM and JetSmart; prices spike after July
Bus Sur or Buses Fernández; $15–20 (CLP14,200–CLP19,000) one way
~$50 USD (CLP 48,500) for foreigners, valid 3 consecutive days
The critical booking: refugios. The W Trek has two operators — Vertice and Fantástico Sur — each controlling different sections. You need to book with both. Refugios include a bunk bed, dinner, and breakfast. Campsites are cheaper but require you to carry (or rent) gear.
Fly to Punta Arenas (PUQ) from Santiago. LATAM runs 2–3 daily flights; JetSmart is the budget option. Flight time: ~3.5 hours. From Punta Arenas, take a bus to Puerto Natales (~3 hours, $15–20) — this is your base town for supplies, gear rental, and the final bus into the park.
Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine: Buses depart at 7:00 and 7:30 AM daily during season ($15–20 round trip, ~2 hours). Book the day before at the bus terminal — don't wait until morning.
Pro tip: Most people walk the W from west to east (Grey → Torres). Going east to west means you hit the Torres del Paine viewpoint on Day 1 while your legs are fresh — but the sunrise there is better from the east approach.

Plan ahead with this timeline:
8 months out
Decide on dates. Check refugio availability on Vertice and Fantástico Sur websites. Book refugios immediately if October-January.
6 months out
Book flights to Punta Arenas. Confirm all refugio/campsite reservations.
3 months out
Book travel insurance (must cover trekking). Reserve bus from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales if peak season.
1 month out
Print/download all booking confirmations. Check weather forecast trends. Reserve gear rental in Puerto Natales if needed.
1 week out
Pack. Check for park closure alerts (weather-related closures happen). Confirm all bookings via email.
The W Trek is not a wilderness experience. During peak season (December–February), you'll share the trail with hundreds of other trekkers. Refugios are communal, loud, and not especially comfortable. The scenery is extraordinary — genuinely exceptional — but if you're imagining solitude, come in October or late March when the weather is unpredictable but the trails are quiet.
If this itinerary is looking like your kind of five days, we can help you lock it down.
