This article is part of: Tour du Mont Blanc — France/Italy/Switzerland in TRAILS THAT TRANSFORM YOU
The Tour du Mont Blanc is a 170km loop around Europe's highest mountain, crossing six passes and three countries in 10 days. The infrastructure is exceptional — a network of 15+ rifugios (mountain huts) that serve hot meals and provide beds means you don't carry camping gear. It also means that in peak season, every bed sells out.
Here's the booking system that actually works.
The TMB is split between two operators: Gites d'Etape and the FFCAM (French Alpine Club). Different sections use different systems.
Direct to each rifugio + FFCAM app
Direct + booking platforms
Direct to hut or SwissLodge
The reality: There's no single booking platform. You book each rifugio individually. This is annoying and why people hire tour operators to handle it.
Step 1: Lock in your trek dates (3–4 months ahead)
The TMB operates mid-June through mid-September. Pick your week. Peak is July 1–August 15. If you want peak season, book now.
The less crowded sweet spot is late August–early September. Weather is still solid, rifucios have more availability, and the trail isn't a parade of 500 trekkers.
Step 2: Map out your refugios (3–4 months ahead)
A standard 10-day TMB hits roughly these points:
This is ONE version. You can add rest days, skip sections, change the route. But this is the classic flow.
Step 3: Book French rifugios first (3 months out)
French side books out fastest. Visit each rifugio's website and book directly:
Refuge Albert Premier: albertpremier.com — email reservation
Refuge de Forclaz: refugeforclaz.com — online booking form
Refuge Bétemps: refugebtemps.com — direct email
Some have online booking, others require email. Expect confirmation within 2–3 days. Many ask for a deposit ($30–50 (€28–€46)) to hold the spot — pay it immediately.
Cost: $55–85/night half-board (bed + dinner + breakfast).
Step 4: Book Italian rifugios (2.5–3 months out)
Italian side is slightly less crowded but books out too. Email or call directly:
Rifugio Bonatti: rifugiobonatti.it — phone (+39 0165 843536) or email
Rifugio Maison Vieille: maisonvieille.it — email (maisonvieille@gmail.com)
Provide: your dates, number of people, preferred meals (full board or half-board).
Cost: $55–80/night half-board.
Step 5: Book Swiss section (2.5–3 months out)
Swiss rifugios are less congested but require earlier confirmation. Use SwissLodge.com or email directly:
Grand St-Bernard Hospice: grandsaintbernard.com
Refuge du Buet: buet.com
Cost: 80–$110 (~$90–110) per night half-board.
If your preferred rifugio is full, ask about nearby alternatives on the same day. The TMB has sufficient rifugio density that if Refuge A is full, Refuge B is 2 km away (an easy re-route).
Rifugios can also help you find campsite alternatives nearby at $15–20/night if you're flexible.
Groups (4+): Book 4–5 months out and request group rates. Some rifugios give 5–10% discounts for groups and guarantee consecutive beds.
Solo: Book the same timeline as groups, but mention you're solo — some rifugios hold back beds for single travelers to fill gaps.
Most rifugios require 30–50% deposit to hold the reservation, due within 2 weeks of booking. Balance due on arrival (cash or card; have both options).
Cancellation policy: Typically full refund up to 30 days before, 50% refund 7–30 days before, no refund within 7 days. Confirm when you book.
For 10 days, 9 nights: $490–765 per person.
Add transport (bus to Chamonix $20 internal shuttles $20–30 total), packed lunches ($10–12/day), and you're at roughly $650–950 per person on-ground.
Book all your reservations within a 2-week window (3–4 months ahead). Staggered bookings mean some might fill out by the time you book later ones.
Call rifugios directly, not email — you get instant confirmation and can ask about alternatives if booked
In case of weather closures, rifugios will work with you on date changes (no refund, but a reschedule option)
Counter-clockwise booking (the less common direction) has slightly better availability — fewer groups walk that way
