Rwanda's history is unfathomably dark — the 1994 genocide killed 800,000 people in 100 days. The country's recovery is what makes it worth visiting. Rwanda is the safest country in Africa. Infrastructure works. Roads are paved. The police are polite. Health care is functional. Education is prioritized. Women hold 61% of parliamentary seats. This is not tourism whitewashing — it's a country that built systems that work from the rubble of catastrophe.
The landscape is what locals call "the land of a thousand hills" — rolling green mountains that seem to go on forever, lush and startlingly beautiful. You can visit Volcanoes National Park to track mountain gorillas (expensive at $1,500 per permit but legitimate, transformative wildlife experience). You can visit Lake Kivu for beach time. You can explore Kigali, the capital, which is quiet, orderly, and full of good restaurants at reasonable prices.
The food is simple — rice, beans, plantains, cassava, sweet potatoes, grilled fish and meat — but it's cooked well and costs almost nothing. $2–4 for a full meal. The beer is excellent. The people are gracious without being performative. Rwanda punches above its weight in terms of safety, accessibility, and genuine hospitality.
Mountain gorilla tracking (Volcanoes National Park): A 1–2 hour hike through misty forest to find habituated gorilla families. Once you find them, you have 1 hour to observe. Permits are $1,500 (expensive, but proceeds support conservation and gorilla protection). Go on an organized tour through a local operator.
Lake Kivu beach time: A large freshwater lake on the border with DRC, with beach towns and small resorts. Swimming, water sports, fresh fish grilled on the beach. $5–15 per day activities.
Kigali Genocide Memorial: A museum and memorial documenting the 1994 genocide. Heavy but essential. $3 entry. Allow 2–3 hours.
Nyungwe Forest canopy walk: A 280-meter cable walkway suspended above rainforest canopy. Wildlife, views, and the sensation of walking through treetops. $30 entry, $10 for guided walk.
Budget:: Heaven Boutique Hostel — Kigali location, social hostel, good food. Dorms $10–15, privates $30–45.
Mid-Range:: Chez Lando Guesthouse — boutique, excellent restaurant, welcoming owner. $70–100/night.
Splurge:: The Retreat Kigali — design-forward luxury, pool, restaurant. $200–280/night.
Ugali: Thick maize porridge served with stews, greens, or beans. Staple carb throughout East Africa. $2–3.
Grilled tilapia: Fresh lake or river fish grilled whole with salt and lime. Simple, sweet, fresh. $5–8.
Beans and plantains: Cooked together with onions and spices, served as a side or main. $2–4.
Matoke: Steamed plantains mashed and served with beans or meat sauce. Starchy, filling, local specialty. $2–3.
Fresh avocado with lemon and salt: Avocados are massive and cheap. Cut one in half, squeeze lemon, salt, and eat with a spoon. $0.50–1.
