The Southern Alps Loop is a South Island drive connecting Milford Sound, Queenstown, Lake Hawea, and back to Queenstown. It's one of the world's most scenic drives, with dramatic mountain scenery, fjords, and adventure-activity culture. The drive is manageable (1.5–2 hours between main destinations) but packed with viewpoints, hikes, and side trips.
Milford Sound is a fjord accessible only by car through a spectacular mountain pass. You drive up into the mountains, through tunnels carved into rock, and emerge at a vertical-walled fjord with a waterfall dropping into the sea. The road itself is the attraction. Queenstown is an adventure town full of mountain sports, restaurants, and nightlife. Lake Hawea is quieter, a beautiful drive through mountains around a pristine lake.
The loop can be driven in 3–5 days if you're moving, or 7–10 days if you stop for hikes and activities. Milford Sound and Queenstown are both touristy but legitimately spectacular. The less-known Lake Hawea loop offers quieter scenery with fewer crowds.
Self-drive costs $40–60/day for car rental, $40–100/night for accommodation depending on luxury level, and food $15–25/day. Organized tours available but self-driving offers more flexibility.
Milford Sound drive and cruise: Drive the scenic Milford Road (pass itself is the experience), then take a boat cruise into the fjord. Road free, cruise $65–100.
Milford Track hiking: A famous 4-day wilderness trek through rainforest and mountains ending at Milford Sound. $1,300–1,600 all-inclusive through DOC (Department of Conservation). Book ahead.
Queenstown adventure activities: Bungee jumping, paragliding, jet boating, wine tasting. Activities $50–150 each. Choose based on comfort level.
Lake Hawea scenic drive and hike: Drive the quieter east side of Lake Hawea, stop for short hikes with mountain-and-lake views. Free (scenery), $10–15 for guided walks if desired.
Budget:: Hostels in Queenstown or Milford: Nomad Hostel (Queenstown), $15–25 dorms.
Mid-Range:: Guesthouses and boutique hotels $70–120/night.
Splurge:: Luxury lodges (Dart Stables) or Queenstown adventure resorts (Adventure Queenstown) $150–250/night.
Fresh venison and lamb: New Zealand specialties, grilled or stewed. $18–28 at a restaurant.
Hokey pokey ice cream: A New Zealand classic — vanilla ice cream with honeycomb candy pieces. Ice cream shop, $5–8.
Fresh fish: Fish and chips or grilled fish. Coastal towns, $12–20.
Wine (Central Otago wines): Pinot Noir from nearby regions. Excellent and reasonably priced. Bottle at a wine bar $10–18, at a shop $8–15.

Daily budget
$70–130 (car rental $40–60, accommodation $20–50, food $15–25, activities $10–30)
Best time
December–February (summer, warm) or March–April (autumn, less crowded)
Drive Milford Road early morning (before 9am) to avoid tour buses and catch the light on the waterfalls. If you're not doing Milford Track, a day trip to Milford Sound (drive and cruise) is enough for that portion. Spend extra time in quieter Lake Hawea or around Queenstown's adventure scene.
