Marrakech gets the guidebook attention. Essaouira — a coastal town 170km away — is Marrakech's escape valve. It's a fishing village that happens to have French colonial architecture, a beach, and wind that's constant (which sounds bad but creates a sea breeze that breaks the heat).
Essaouira has a differently calibrated tourism. It's less aggressively touristy than Marrakech medinas. The medina is smaller and walkable. Beaches are real beaches (not postcards). A walk down the waterfront at sunset shows fishing boats coming in. Food is excellent and fresh because fish is abundant.
The town had a moment in the 90s when Jimi Hendrix visited (there's a plaque), which adds weird cultural weight. Bob Marley allegedly visited too. But these details are secondary to the actual experience, which is simple: waterfront town, fresh seafood, wind-swept beaches, reasonable prices.
Medina wandering: Smaller than Marrakech's medina, walkable without feeling rushed. Spice shops, textiles, restaurants. Free to walk. Expect haggling. 2–3 hours.
Fishing port walk at sunset: Watch boats return with the day's catch. Stand on the quay and watch activity. Free. 1 hour.
Beach walk: Essaouira has real sand beaches (unlike many Moroccan coasts). Swim if you're brave (water is cold). Free. Afternoon wind is consistent.
Jimi Hendrix plaque hunt: The small plaque commemorating his visit is somewhere in the medina. Asking locals and searching is part of the hunt. Free.
Budget:: Small guesthouses and riads. $12–18/night.
Mid-Range:: Upgraded riads or small hotels. $25–40/night.
Splurge:: Beachfront hotel or upscale riad. $80–150/night.
Fresh fish (grilled): The whole point of Essaouira. Grilled whole fish with lemon. $6–12.
Tagine: Slow-cooked stew (often fish or chicken) in a cone-shaped pot. $5–10.
Seafood couscous: Couscous with fresh fish and vegetables. Hearty and cheap. $6–10.
Moroccan mint tea: Green tea with fresh mint and sugar. Served in glasses, complementary at riads. Cafés $0.50–1.
Msemen (fried pastry): Flaky pastry fried and served with honey or savory. Breakfast or snack. $1–2.
Getting there
Bus or shared taxi from Marrakech (3 hours, $8–12)
Daily budget
$25–40 (accommodation $12–20, food $8–15, activities $3–8)
Best time
March–May or September–October (warm, wind less intense)
Essaouira is a functioning fishing town, not a theme park version of a fishing town. Eat fish at small restaurants where locals eat (often unmarked). The beach is great for walking but cold for swimming unless you're in summer. Wind is constant; expect it and pack a light windbreaker. Haggling in the medina is expected but less aggressive than Marrakech. Spring and fall are ideal; summer gets hot and crowded, winter is cool and quiet.
