Venice is sinking and increasingly flooded. Acqua alta (high water flooding) is becoming more frequent and severe. Climate change and ground subsidence are accelerating the timeline. Venice might not be uninhabitable for decades, but the experience of walking through medieval streets with water at your feet is becoming normative rather than exceptional.
Additionally, Venice is implementing tourism restrictions. A daily-entry fee ($5–15) is being introduced to manage crowds. Day-trippers might be capped. The city is choosing to limit visitors before carrying capacity is exceeded.
The Venice of uncrowded canals and leisurely dinners is already gone. But the Venice of marble churches, medieval art, and impossible city-building is still there. Experiencing it before further tourism restrictions tighten makes sense.
Basilica di San Marco: Byzantine and Romanesque cathedral with gold mosaics. $20 entry (special areas cost extra). 1–2 hours.
Doge's Palace: Gothic palace with art and furniture. $20 entry. 1–2 hours.
Grand Canal vaporetto (water bus) ride: Public water transit through main canal. $10 round-trip. Essential experience.
Early morning walking: Wake at 6 AM, walk before crowds. Streets are empty, light is golden. Free. 2–3 hours.
Budget:: Hostels and small guesthouses on Cannaregio side (west of canal). $50–70/night.
Mid-Range:: Hotels and upgraded guesthouses. $70–120/night.
Splurge:: Luxury hotels or canal-facing properties. $150–300+/night.
Spaghetti alle vongole (white clam sauce): Pasta with littleneck clams. $14–22.
Seafood risotto: Risotto with mussels, clams, shrimp. $12–20.
Cicchetti: Venetian-style tapas. Small plates at bars. $2–4 per plate.
Tiramisu: Mascarpone and cocoa dessert. $4–7.
Aperol Spritz: Local cocktail (Aperol, Prosecco, soda, ice). $3–5.
Getting there
Fly to Venice (airport 8km away, train or boat to city) or fly to mainland Italy and train
Daily budget
$60–100 (accommodation $50–80, food $15–25, water taxis $20–40/day, entry fee $5–15)
Best time
May–June or September–October (warm, fewer tourists than summer)
Stay on Cannaregio or San Croce sides (west of Grand Canal), not San Marco area (overpriced and touristy). Wake early (6–7 AM) and walk before crowds. Evening walks (after 6 PM) are also less crowded. The high water (acqua alta) is increasingly common; if it happens, embrace it (bring waterproof shoes) rather than resist it. Single-day visits are inadequate; stay 2–3 nights minimum. The entry fee ($5–15) will be implemented; current timing is uncertain.
