The Twelve Apostles are limestone stacks rising out of the Southern Ocean on Australia's Great Ocean Road. They're iconic and photographed constantly. They're also disappearing.
Limestone erodes. The Apostles have been collapsing regularly — one collapsed in 2005 (reducing them from 12 to 11). Another collapsed in 2009. The rate of collapse is accelerating as ocean levels rise and wave action intensifies. Within 10–20 years, several more will likely collapse. Eventually (centuries from now), none will remain.
Seeing them now, while most are still standing, is a "now or never" experience. Photograph them, see the landscape, understand geological change in real-time.
Twelve Apostles viewpoint: Designated viewpoint with parking and walking paths. Free. Best at golden hour (sunset light). 1–2 hours.

Loch Ard Gorge walk: Nearby gorge with walking trails and shipwreck history. Parking $7. 1–2 hours.

Getting there
Rent car in Melbourne (2.5-hour drive to Apostles) or join tour
Daily budget
$60–100 (accommodation $40–70, food $15–25, transport $10–15)
Best time
December–February (summer, best light); avoid July–August (winter, storms)
Go early (sunrise or early morning) for the best light and fewest crowds. Sunset is photographer-packed. The viewpoint is free but parking ($7) is charged. Summer is best for weather; winter brings storms but dramatic light. The Apostles are eroding measurably; each year is genuinely different. Rent a car rather than joining a tour to spend as long as you want. Combine with other Great Ocean Road stops (Loch Ard Gorge, London Arch, Bay of Islands) for a full day.
