Lesotho is a mountain kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa. It's one of only two completely landlocked countries in Africa. The landscape is severe — mountains, valleys, passes at high altitude. Villages are remote. Tourism infrastructure is minimal.
Lesotho works as a pony-trekking destination. Highland ponies are the main transport historically; you can hire ponies and guides, trek for days through mountains, staying in villages. The experience is genuinely immersive and difficult.
But Lesotho also works for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring an alternative to South Africa that few tourists see. The country is poor by global standards but genuinely welcoming. You'll be one of very few tourists wherever you go.
Pony-trek into mountains (multi-day): Hire ponies and guide, trek through remote villages. 3–7 day treks available. $30–50/day all-inclusive (guide, pony, meals, basic accommodation). Booking through Malealea Lodge or similar.
Tsehlanyane National Park hike: Mountain trails with views. Self-guided or with guide. $5–10 park entry. Guides $20–30/day.
Maletsunyane Falls (near Morija): Waterfall hike. Guide recommended. 3–4 hours. $10–20 with guide.
Foothill town wandering (Thaba Bosiu, Morija): Small towns with churches and colonial history. Free to walk. 1–2 hours per town.
Budget:: Basic guesthouses or village homestays. $12–18/night.
Mid-Range:: Upgraded guesthouses or mountain lodges. $25–40/night.
Splurge:: Boutique mountain lodge. $60–100/night.
Papa (maize porridge): Staple carb. $1–2 per serving.
Beans and vegetables: Slow-cooked stews. $2–4.
Bread: Bakeries throughout villages. $0.30–0.50 per loaf.
Cured meat (droëwors): Dried sausage. $2–3 per portion.
Strong tea: With milk and sugar. $0.50–1.

Daily budget
$25–40 (accommodation $12–20, food $8–12, activities $3–8, transport $2–5)
Best time
October–April (warm seasons; May–September is cold and sometimes snowy)
Pony-trekking is the signature experience but requires comfort with horses and rustic conditions. Malealea Lodge in the highlands coordinates treks and provides context. Roads are rough in places; going with a driver/guide is safer. Lesotho is one of the poorest countries in the world; expect basic infrastructure outside main towns. But the welcome is genuine and the landscape is remarkable. English is widely understood; communication is feasible.
