August in Greenland is summer by Arctic standards. It's the brief window when the midnight sun stays above the horizon and temperatures climb to 10–15°C (50–59°F). That sounds cold—and it is—but it feels warm when the sun is hitting you directly. Then the clouds roll in, the wind rises, and you suddenly understand why Greenland is known for brutal weather.
The key to Greenland packing is layers and waterproofing. You're not going for warmth only; you're going for adaptability.
Cotton anything.
Cotton absorbs moisture and loses all insulation when wet. Avoid cotton shirts, pants, and socks.
Down jackets.
Unless it's guaranteed dry, down loses insulation when wet. Synthetic insulation (Primaloft, Thinsulate) performs better in Arctic moisture.
Heavy denim.
Same issue as cotton—useless when wet and takes forever to dry.
Opened sunscreen.
Customs may have restrictions. Buy in-country (expensive) or bring sealed bottles.
Pack everything in a carry-on backpack (not checked luggage). Flights in Greenland sometimes lose baggage, and you don't want to be without your rain jacket. Aim for 12–15 liters; you're wearing most of your clothing, not packing it.
Typical packed weight: 6–8 kg (13–18 lbs) after wearing your bulkiest items on the plane.
On August 12, bring:
You'll stand for 2–3 hours. Comfort matters. Good layers mean you can enjoy the moment instead of shivering through it.
