This article is part of: Kyrgyzstan — Tien Shan Mountains in TRAILS THAT TRANSFORM YOU
You're not carrying a tent or stove. The yurts have beds. So what do you actually need?
Footwear: Broken-in hiking boots — preferably waterproof. You'll cross streams. Trail runners work if you're okay with wet feet. Sandals for camp. Leave the fashion shoes at home.
Layers: The Tien Shan gives you four seasons in a day. Pack a fleece, a rain jacket, and a down puffy for evenings. Base layers that dry fast. A sun hat and a warm beanie. Gloves if you're going above 3,500m.
Sleep gear: Most yurts provide blankets, but a sleeping bag liner adds comfort and hygiene. Earplugs — someone will snore.
Essentials: Headlamp. Sunscreen and lip balm (the altitude burns). First-aid kit with blister tape. Maps.me downloaded before you leave Bishkek — there's no signal. Cash (som) for village stops.
Skip: Heavy camera gear (phone is enough), too many clothes (you'll rewear), books (you'll sleep at 9 PM).
