This article is part of: Christchurch, New Zealand in THE OVERLOOKED NEIGHBOR
Christchurch is South Island's largest city and the entry point for most travelers. Instead of just passing through, base yourself here 2–3 days and use it as a hub for day trips and regional exploration.
Central location: 2–3 hours from most South Island attractions (Banks Peninsula, Mt. Cook, Aoraki/Mount Cook, thermal pools, hiking trailheads).
Infrastructure: Flights arrive here. Buses leave from here. Hotels, restaurants, services are reliable.
Cheaper than tourist hubs: Accommodation and food are more affordable than Queenstown or Milford Sound areas.
Walkable downtown: You can explore the city on foot. Neighborhoods are interesting. You're not dependent on tours for entertainment.
Rental car base: If renting a car, Christchurch is where to start/end.
Flights into Christchurch:
From Auckland: 2.5 hours, $80–150 (NZ$135–NZ$255)
From other NZ cities or Australia: Various connections
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for good pricing
Moving around South Island:
Option 1: Rental car
Cost: $40–60/day (book 2–3 weeks out)
Best for: Flexibility, multiple days exploring
Catch: New Zealand drives on the left
Option 2: Buses (InterCity, Naked Bus)
Cost: $15–40 per journey
Best for: Budget, minimal planning
Catch: Fixed schedules, less flexible
Option 3: Combination (fly in, rent car 4 days, then bus)
Cost: Mixed
Best for: Balance of flexibility and budget
Day 1: Arrive, settle Christchurch
Fly in, pick up rental car (or settle into accommodations if not renting)
Afternoon: Walk downtown, Botanic Gardens, rest from travel
Dinner: Neighborhood restaurant (Addington, Riccarton, or Sumner)
Day 2: Day trip — Banks Peninsula Loop
1–1.5 hours from Christchurch
Drive the peninsula: Akaroa town (French colonial architecture, cute), Otago Harbour, wildlife (penguins, seals)
Lunch in Akaroa
Return to Christchurch by evening
Cost: Gas + lunch ($20–30)
Day 3: Full day — Mount Cook National Park
3–3.5 hours from Christchurch
Drive through South Island scenery (dramatic)
Aoraki/Mount Cook valley: hike, viewpoints, stay a few hours
Return to Christchurch (optional: overnight stay near Mt. Cook if doing hiking)
Cost: Gas + lunch ($30–40)
Day 4: Local Christchurch exploration OR thermal pools day trip
If exploring Christchurch:
Quake City museum, street art tours, art galleries, neighborhood walks
If day trip:
Hanmer Springs hot springs (1 hour north), swimming, spa, scenic drives
Cost: Museum $15–20 or thermal pools $20–30
Day 5: Departure or extension
If leaving: Drive to airport, return rental car
If extending: Day hike (Mt. Somers, trails near Christchurch), or travel further south (Dunedin, Milford Sound — would require multiple nights)
Central Christchurch (walking distance to downtown): $60–100/night
Convenience, walkable, restaurants near
Neighborhoods (Addington, Riccarton, Sumner): $50–80/night
Better food/cafe culture, local feel, quiet
Budget options: $30–50/night
Hostels, basic hotels, acceptable cleanliness
My recommendation: Spend night 1 & 2 in neighborhood hotel ($50–70), night 3–5 depends on day trips. If doing Mt. Cook overnight, book accommodation there ($60–100). If doing Hanmer Springs day trip, return to Christchurch evening.
Breakfast: Local cafe, $6–10 (flat white coffee culture, excellent pastries)
Lunch: On day trips, bring food or eat local restaurants ($12–18)
Dinner: Neighborhood restaurants in Christchurch, $15–25
Budget: $30–40/day on food
To rent or not:
If doing multiple day trips from Christchurch (Banks Peninsula + Mt. Cook + Hanmer Springs): Rent car, $50–60/day
If doing one day trip + staying local: Skip car, use buses or tours
If extending 5+ days into South Island: Rent car
Booking: 2–3 weeks in advance via Rentalcars.com or direct with company. Prices rise if booked last-minute.
Insurance: Comprehensive coverage, $10–15/day additional. Consider if driving in unfamiliar territory.
$170–190/day per person (roughly New Zealand's mid-range cost).
6–8 weeks out
Book flights to Christchurch
4–6 weeks out
Book car rental if needed
3–4 weeks out
Book accommodations
2 weeks out
Research day trips, plan itinerary
1 week out
Reconfirm car rental, accommodation
If not renting a car, book half-day or full-day tours from Christchurch:
Banks Peninsula tour: $60–80
Mt. Cook day trip: $100–150
Hanmer Springs: $50–70
These include transport and sometimes meals. Less flexible but removes driving stress.
Spend 2 nights in Christchurch (explore the city, get acclimated), then 2–3 nights doing day trips or extending to 1–2 nights elsewhere. This gives you downtown Christchurch + regional exploration without forcing yourself to move hotels daily.
If you're using Christchurch as a South Island base camp, 5 days here allows city exploration + 2–3 major day trips comfortably.
